Schedule Mate

UX / UI DESIGN

Project Overview

The goal of this project was to design a calendar app that simplifies personal and professional planning for users of all abilities. Schedule Mate is the product of a semester-long capstone project that required extensive research, creative direction, and innovative design thinking. As someone who is passionate about journaling and productivity, I wanted to create an app that makes these processes less time-consuming and therefore more enjoyable for all!

The Challenge

How might I design an app that assumes the workload and time typically associated with scheduling by incorporating an AI bot to plan for the user?

Design Approach

The main goal of this project was to take the effort out of effective scheduling by focusing on a voice enabled AI 'bot' that was easy to use with a friendly interface.

To build a well-designed product, it is important to be a well-informed designer. I surveyed 100+ family, friends, professors, and classmates ranging in ages 18 to 65 years using a combination of interviews and survey quizzes.

84% of people surveyed considered themselves always busy and 70% of those people felt technological advancements had a large impact on their lives getting busier.

Could building an AI-powered scheduling tool seem counterintuitive to someone who feels technology has made their lives busier? Maybe. However, with the nature of AI being like a personal assistant, 68% of users felt having a competent virtual assistant would make their lives feel less hectic.

The responses I received were instrumental in determining which features to include in my app, as well as which ideas to eliminate. At the start of the project, I had a more extensive project in mind, but with the help of my survey, I was able to determine what is most important to users, particularly since I was working with a small timeframe.

Research & Data

With a focus on accessible, voice-enabled design, it was important to focus heavily on the design being built around easy speech recognition features with high contrast and text large enough abiding to ADA compliancy guidelines.

I created multiple iterations of the app in Figma and asked friends and family for opinions as users in the prototype. From here I created high fidelity wireframes and examples of. key features can be seen in the below sections.

Having an Apple Watch app as a part of this project was important to me

because it would add a level of increased accessibility to scheduling

on the go!
